Hey guys,

So in my last post I mentioned that I thought the Volvo C70 that I just purchased needed its wheels to be re-balanced. Well, I took it to Discount Tire, who have always been fair and honest with me (helps that some of them cash their paychecks at my job), and they told me that my tires are shot and need replacing.

According to the gentleman who came out to my car and felt the tires, they have developed waves in the tread because A) they’re a crappy brand (PrimeWell) and B) you shouldn’t put directional tires on any Volvo, because they will do this to any such tire on the quick, partially due to the degree of negative camber they come with from the factory.

So while I am actually kind of glad to have an excuse to replace these cheap, loud, and already worn crappy tires, I’m having trouble finding a tire that ISN’T directional in the size I need (235/45/R17).

The Discount Tire guy recccomended Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06. But in the same performance category the Kumho Ecsta PA31 is cheaper and has better ratings across the board for traction, treadwear, and noise. To further complicate things, this car came with run flats from the factory, and TireRack is having a sale on Bridgestone DriveGuard runflats.

Just hoping for a little advice on what I should go for, or if any of you know a straight-up all season tire that my car will hopefully wear evenly. I live in Florida, so no snow-ability needed.

if your in Florida, y not non-all seasons? I’ve heard a few people recommend the ExtremeContact. I’m getting falken ziex ze950 put on tomorrow.

I’m looking at Yokohama Advan v105's for my next tyre as they have been hyped as a decent alternative to Primacy HP’s and have found them a lot cheaper too, though I don’t see why you couldn’t put directionals on as why would this issue just affect those types of tyres?

I’m not a race car driver and just want something that’s quiet, will last, and won’t kill me during Florida’s frequent five minute monsoons. But I may have to go with a summer tire since there are so few all season options it seems.

To be honest, it didn’t make much sense to me either, but I think he said it was something to do with not being able to rotate them to the other side of the car. Directionals can only swap axles on the same side.

I would avoid runflats if possible. They are recommending a non-directional tire so that you can rotate the tires in an X pattern to make them last as long as possible. Non-directional tires make their own compromises in performance but for daily driving it probably won’t matter much.

You could use a directional tire and halfway through their life dismount and remount them opposite of how they were originally. The $60 or so to do that would probably outweigh the cost in replacing the tires prematurely.

i’d imagine you can get a nice summer tire that would be just as quiet. i couldn;t imagine them not being good int he rain as well, cuz it still rains in the summer so I would imagine they still have to address that. Your kinda buying a tire for 4 seasons but only using 1 season of its ability.

I had the DWS on my Passat for several years and really liked them. Not as pricey as the Michelin/Bridgestone competitors, but a little more cash than the Falken/Toyo/Kumho/OtherAsian brands.

Discount Tire Direct (where I normally shop) is also doing some great rebate deals right now. If you’re patient, it seems like they do a $100 Visa gift card at least once every few months.

I stuck 4 Kumho ecsta HS51's one the Abarth a few few months ago cos it was desperate for new boots and my house renovations are getting expensive.Read a few reviews, seemed good and they are great, grippy and plenty of feedback in the dry, quiet etc but it's in the wet they really shine, so sure footed. The Abarth is better in the wet on them than my DS4 is on it's (only a few thousand mile old) very expensive Pilot SuperSports.

The ExtremeContact DW is the summer flavor (DWS is All-Season) and you get improved dry performance while still maintaining road noise levels and wet performance. Cost is a wash, from the last time I looked.

The camber issue shows up across the P1 line, and you can get adjustable rear control arms to let you align out the issue. This isn’t a reason not to get directional tires from any mechanical reason, only because you can rotate non-directional tires which slows the camber wear.

OH MY GOD! HOW DID I MISS THIS!?! A C70! I’M SO JEALOUS!!!!

Okay, beautiful car. Now tires. I had no idea the C70 ran such a different setup than the C30. Stock, the C30 was 205/50/17

I’ve got upgraded 18" wheels now and they are 235/40/18 on the Continentals you mentioned above.

I’ve never been a fan of Continental tires. They are rather soft and I find they wear quickly. Also, the Uniroyal Tiger Paws I had before seemed quieter.

Maybe try dropping the sidewall a little? Maybe 235/40/17 will be a bit easier? It might throw your speedo off a couple miles an hour though. Good luck and welcome back to Volvo ownership!

PS: saw your AUX cord lost while lurking. Try getting a better quality cord. I actually had to spend like $15 getting this HD one to stop the annoying static.

yeah I guess there is that, though I’ve never rotated my tyres so doesn’t bother me

I really don’t get why people think they need All-season tires in the rain or that summer tires are somehow worse in it. Unless you buy some ultra high performance semi slicks like Michelin Pilot Cup 2s a proper summer tire will outclass an all season especially in warm and wet Florida weather.

If you have to swap tires on the same axle to even out your wear what you need is an alignment not nondirectional tires. Sounds like the guy was talking out of his ass or didn’t get his point across at all.

Hahaha, yeah, I dearly missed my S80, but I wanted a convertible, and completely forgot the C70 existed until I drove one and found it combined the best of both worlds.

I solved my static problem by limiting the car’s stereo volume to half and turning the volume up on the phone. But I will try a different cord.

I checked Discount Tire Direct and they have some Yokohama AVID ENVigor tires in the size I need, very highly rated and not too expensive so I think I’m going to go with those.

I love, love, love my C70.

I don’t know if you care, but one of the first upgrades I did was make my daytime running lights LED. These P1s make headlight changes really easy and the LEDs popped. But that might be a personal thing.

Sorry for bad pic. Lowlight cell phone trying togeta picture of light isnt easy.

Conti. What else ...

No, honestly, they are way better than some cheap Kumho’s. The tyres are the only things that keep you from ending up in the ditch. You just cannot afford not to buy the best you can get. And the price differential are not really make-or-break.

If you buy sportcontact or extremecontact of course they wear out faster than some hard rubber. But while they wear out they give you tons of grip and that is what you want.

They were the tires that came on it. Not my first choice. They don’t seem too bad. I just prefer Michelins a lot more
